What is a CT (Computed Tomography) Scan (Abdomen/Pelvis)?

This information is designed to help you understand the test(s) you will be having.

SPECIAL NOTES:

Your examination will be interpreted by a Radiologist (physician specializing in medical imaging). The Radiologist will dictate a report that states your exam results. The report will be typed and sent to your physician. You can make arrangements with your physician on how you will receive your exam results (such as follow-up appointment, calling the physician office, etc.).

A CT (computed tomagraphy) scan is a painless method of taking a series of special pictures of your body. (see film example to the right) You will be asked to lie on a special table and the radiographer will position you for the examination. You may have to receive an intravenous contrast solution during the examination.

OUTPATIENT PREPARATION:

(Abdomen and/or Pelvis)

Come to the Radiology/Medical Imaging Department no later than one day before your scheduled test to pick up a prep that you need to drink.

Drink 1 bottle of prep at 8:00PM-- the night before; and the 2nd bottle 1 hour before your scheduled appointment.

You should have nothing solid to eat 4 hours before the exam-- only clear liquids (non-pulp fruit juices, tea - no sugar or cream, water).

LENGTH OF PROCEDURE:

The procedure will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

For exams being done as an outpatient, please arrive in registration 30 minutes prior to the appointment time. Most exams will not require you to wear a gown.
