What is a Brain Scan? Reason(s) for the Examination:

 

Brain scans are used to identify areas of the brain that are not receiving blood supply. They are used to help identify causes of dementia.

 

Length of Exam:

Usually one hour.

 

Preparation:

None.

 

Description:

An IV (intravenous) catheter is inserted in your arm or hand vein. 15 minutes later, a tracer will be injected through the catheter, followed by about one hour of imaging of your brain.
