What is a Gastric Emtying Study? Reason(s) for the Examination:
Gastric emptying studies are used to help check to see if the stomach is contracting or is obstructed.
Length of Exam:
One to 2.5 hours
Preparation:
Do not eat or drink anything overnight and in the morning.
Description:
You will eat a cooked egg containing some radioactivity, two pieces of toast and 120cc of water (or just drink 300cc water mixed with some radioactivity). Images will be taken every 15 minutes for two hours. You will be able to get up between images (or lay down for an entire hour if you only drank the radioactive water).
