What is an MIBG Scan? Reason(s) for the Examination:

 

An MIBG scan is used to help look for pheochromocytomas.

 

Length of Exam:

Injection takes about 5 minutes, return 48 to 72 hours later for about 30 minutes of imaging.

 

Preparation:

Need to take Lugol's solution (0.3 ml/day), or SSKI potassium iodide solution (0.12 ml/day), one day before the study and 5 to 7 days after the study, to block the thyroid gland from accumulating the radioactive tracer. Please call us to see if any of your medications will interfere with the study;  many antihypertensive or antidepressant drugs do.
