What is a Renal Scan? Reason(s) for the Examination:

 

A renal scan is used to help determine your kidney blood flow and function. Look for urine blockages and leaks.

 

Length of Exam:

30-60 minutes.

 

Preparation:

Drink plenty of fluids, to make sure that you are not dehydrated during the exam.

 

Description:

A tracer will be injected into a vein or through an IV (intravenous) catheter inserted into an arm or hand vein (children). Images are taken for about 20 minutes. If images show potential urine blockages, a diuretic (Lasix) will be injected, followed by an additional 20 minutes of images.
